Did you know that your diet can reduce your arthritis symptoms?

Yes! You heard correctly! By making minimal changes to your diet you can not only improve your overall health, but can reduce inflammation and obesity, which in turn, can calm arthritis. We’ve pulled together of some of the most simple additions to your diet that will really help your movements:

Water!

I think if we were questioned, most of us would admit we don’t drink enough water. The body is around 75% water, and it plays a vital role in your health. It keeps your joints lubricated, absorbs shock in your spine and protects sensitive tissues.

Water also delivers oxygen throughout the body, boosts skin health, regulates body temperature, flushes body waste, maintains blood pressure and can be helpful for weight loss. Phew!

Omega-3 fatty acids

These are great for healthy muscle, joint and cartilage function. Consider adding some of the following to your meals:

  • Fish and other seafood (especially fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, herring, and sardines)

  • Nuts and seeds (such as flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts)

  • Plant oils (such as flaxseed oil, avocado oil)

Whole Berries

Eating berries – such as blueberries, raspberries and strawberries – have been shown to give you the antioxidants you need to support overall wellbeing.

Turmeric

A small addition to any dish, this spice packs some serious gusto. Research has shown that it supports strong bones, joints and muscles. Traditionally added to curries to give colour and flavour, but why not try adding it to a latte or grabbing yourself a turmeric tea.

Green tea

Has a very high flavonoid content, which supports bone and joint function.

Supplements

If you are less keen to use fresh foods to support your diet, or have a more picky palate, you could try using supplements instead.

  • Boswellia Serrate (Indian Frankincense) has proven anti-inflammatory effects and is showing promise in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

  • Ginger, Cat’s Claw and S-adenosylmethionine has anti-inflammatory compounds

  • Curcumin to reduce morning stiffness and ease movement

All of the above can have a positive affect on your movements and overall health. Even by changing your diet slightly, you can start to see a difference in your joints.
